So, I was taking a picture of a full-ish dumpster behind a Starbucks right around sunrise when I overheard a gentleman close by loudly utter to the fellow next to him, “It’s just garbage.” I chuckled internally at the commentary of a passerby that clearly had some subjective bias to share. True, it was just garbage but the image wasn’t “just garbage.” It was functional as I was taking it for an assignment on food waste, but I was also being particular about how the image came out in spite of the gentleman’s condemnation of my chosen subject matter. To make a long story short: my mind skipped right passed considering I might be polishing a turd and went straight into “challenge accepted” mode. And so, from 2015 to 2018 I went out and took pictures of dumpsters around retail and commercial areas during magic hour, making attractive images of garbage receptacles.
These are some of those images.
